Harris
Morrison, the artist and
designer of Shepherds
Watch® sundials, has
always been fascinated by
artisans.
When he was five, his
mother took him to craft
fairs in
Plum Nelly, Tennessee,
where he became enchanted
by
potters operating their
kick wheels. He moved to
Montreal
to pursue pottery with a
group of like-minded
artisans,
where he grew to become a
Master Potter. There,
with
another Master Potter,
Johannes Caserian, he
developed
a highly successful
pottery business
employing 15 potters.
When
Johannes passed away,
Harris lost a close
friend and his enthusiasm
for the work. He closed
the
pottery shop and after
spending 14 years
building an
agency representing the
best of Canadian crafts,
felt
it was time to focus
again on something he
himself
would develop. While
travelling in France, he
came
upon an antique sundial
and bought it for his
daughter,
Selina. Selina asked
question after question
about it;
about the sun, the stars,
and time. To answer her
questions, he began to do
research, joined the
American and Canadian
sundial societies, and
ended
up designing and
marketing personal
sundials based
on the originals (see The
Company).
Harris
still "throws"
clay and works in other
media
as an artist and
craftsman. In the
meantime he keeps
designing sundials and
plans to launch a new
line of
garden sundials in the
Spring of 2002. |
